Qualified Charitable Distribution
A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. A QCD excludes the amount donated from taxable income, which is unlike regular withdrawals from an IRA. QCDs don’t require that you itemize, which due to recent tax law changes, means you may decide to take advantage of the higher standard deduction but still use a QCD for charitable giving.
Donor Advised Funds
A donor advised fund is like a charitable investment account for the sole purpose of supporting charitable organizations. When you contribute cash, securities or other assets to a donor advised fund, you are generally eligible to take an immediate tax deduction. Funds are disbursed at your discretion.
IRA
By utilizing an IRA for charitable giving, you can satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) obligations starting at age 73, while also supporting a cause you care about. The donated amount is excluded from your taxable income, which can provide a tax advantage, especially if you do not itemize deductions.
Matching Gifts
Apply for a MATCHING GIFT from your employer. Some companies may have religious restrictions on Matching gifts; however, your gift may be eligible for a match if funds are for an outreach ministry or parish school.
